Ama é uma palavra japonesa que significa “mulher do mar”. Nesta curta-metragem, realizada e interpretada por Julie Gautier, uma mulher, fustigada pela chuva, vê-se mergulhada na piscina mais profunda do planeta. Sujeita à gravidade da água, protagoniza uma coreografia sofrida que culmina numa suspensão, num equilíbrio, que precede a ascensão libertadora.

The rain falls like so many tears on a young woman in a little black dress. We dive into her eyes as we dive into her soul drowned in sorrow. The woman is lying on the bottom of the water. She gets up slowly and begins to dance. Her movements are graceful, but her feet are heavy on the bottom. Despite gravity reveal the weight on her shoulders. The music gets faster, the dancer rises faster, breaks free of gravity until she flies off. She falls as exhausted by this fight against herself before finally ascending to the surface. A performance de Julie Gautier é fantástica. Convém realçar que o marido, Guillaume Néry, é campeão mundial de mergulho livre (freediving). A curta-metragem AMA foi concebida para o Dia Internacional da Mulher.

This film speaks a lot to women, because it was written by and for women but it is not exclusive to women. I do not want to make it a militant film, nor feminist. AMA oferece-se como uma curta-metragem minuciosamente concebida e realizada. A coreografia subaquática é, ao mesmo tempo, surpreendente e encantadora. A estética deu ares de sua graça e foi a banhos.
